Job Description Summary

Perform supervisory and skilled work overseeing the construction, repair, maintenance, and inspection of sanitary sewer lines.

Essential Job Functions

•Plan, organize, schedule, assign, and supervise the construction, repair, maintenance, and inspection of sanitary sewer lines; provide training and counseling as needed.

•Ensure proper upkeep, repair, and maintenance of all equipment; determine when equipment should be rotated, traded, or replaced; prepare specifications for vehicles and equipment; and requisition materials and equipment purchased.

•Assist operators as needed to operate equipment and tools, such as dump trucks, sewer flush trucks, saws, drills, pipe cutters, blowers, motors, torches, portable radios, jackhammers, etc., as needed. Repair, clean and inspect sewers; make emergency repairs to equipment.

•Drive to various sites to evaluate and assist crews engaged in maintenance, repair, and internal inspection of sewer lines.

•Investigate and take appropriate action or make recommendations in response to complaints or inquiries from citizens, contractors, other departments, or utilities; initiate improvements to eliminate continuing problems.

•Maintain records and prepare reports related to the work. Investigate and prepare incident reports and insurance documents for liability claims, and vehicle/equipment accidents or injuries.

Ancillary Job Functions

•Ensure that proper safety standards and precautions are followed; develop and organize safety programs and other training for supervisors and employees.

•Assist with annual budget for activities supervised; monitor the expenditure of budgeted funds; and maintain general inventory of materials and supplies.

•Identify sewers for annual sewer rehabilitation contract. Prepare reports detailing findings of inspections of new sewer construction projects.

•Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered

•High school diploma or equivalent required.

•Minimum of three years progressively responsible experience in the operation of medium and heavy equipment, including supervisory experience.

•Must possess and maintain a valid class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position

•Thorough knowledge of proper and effective practices, methods, and procedures in wastewater collection.

•Considerable knowledge of effective supervisory methods, practices, and techniques; ability to plan, organize, schedule, assign, and evaluate the work of subordinate staff.

•Thorough knowledge of equipment and material needs related to wastewater collection and treatment.

•Thorough knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use and operation of motorized equipment and hand/power tools.

•Thorough knowledge of shoring trenches and permit required confined space entries.

•Knowledge of effective and proper maintenance practices and standards of wastewater collection.

•Ability to develop, organize, and implement effective safety and training programs for employees engaged in equipment operation and maintenance work as it related to wastewater collection.

•Ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports.

•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, vendors, and the general public.

•Knowledge of personal computer operation and ability to use standard word processing and spreadsheet applications.

•Strong sense of professionalism to calmly represent the City when addressing complaints and upset customers.

•Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job

•May be required to work in confined spaces, hazardous traffic conditions, or high/dangerous places.

•May be exposed to wet/humid conditions, inclement outdoor weather, extreme temperatures, airborne particles/fumes, moving mechanical parts, or potentially hazardous bodily fluids.

•May be required to wear a respirator in certain situations.

•Exposed to moderate to loud noise levels.

•Must have clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and ability to identify and distinguish colors.

•Must be able to lift 100 or more pounds.

•Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
