Job Description Summary

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Park Forester. This is semi-skilled work in the care and maintenance of trees and trails in City-owned parks and other grounds.

Essential Job Functions

Maintains the urban forest and nature trails on City parks and other public grounds. Primary duties include planting, pruning, watering, and fertilizing trees, in addition to monitoring trees for disease or insect damage. Maintains and constructs trails and participates in the protection and restoration of park nature areas. Uses hand and power tools to plant, prune, remove, water, fertilize, and mulch trees. Applies herbicides and pesticides as needed. Performs preventive maintenance and makes repairs on cutting, spraying, and other equipment. Mixes and applies herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. Maintains tree nursery. May be assigned to wear a respirator and/or self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as needed. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.

Graduation from high school and two years of experience in groundskeeping/urban forestry activities, especially on parks and other public grounds; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which would provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Knowledge of and ability to perform grounds and/or tree maintenance; and knowledge of repair practices and procedures. Knowledge of and ability to use standard hand and power tools and equipment for grounds and tree maintenance activities. Knowledge and application of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and equipment and the use of pesticides and herbicides. Adequate mobility to personally inspect all locations and aspects of a 2400-acre park system, developed and undeveloped. Ability to check job sites or complaint areas that often contain loose rock, mud, ledges, steep inclines, precarious foot holds, and hazards related to areas where heavy machinery is being operated. Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to operate such equipment as chain saws, front end loaders, tractors, hand and power tools in a safe and effective manner; to perform heavy manual labor, including bending, stooping, digging, reaching, and lifting heavy objects up to 100 lbs. Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the general public. Availability to work weekends and holidays as needed. Ability to work outdoors often during extreme weather conditions. Excellent work history and attendance record. Ability to obtain a Missouri certified public operator pesticide license within six months of hire. Possess and maintain a valid Missouri Commercial Driver’s License, Class B and an excellent driving record.
