Job Description Summary

Lead refuse collector for two-person operation or work independently to operate specialized refuse collection equipment to collect and transport refuse and recycling materials to appropriate facilities.

Essential Job Functions

•Operate residential and commercial refuse and recycling collection vehicles, following specified routes.

•Load truck and transport materials to Landfill or Material Recovery Facility.

•Serve as lead collector on a two-person team to oversee work of assisting collectors, safe vehicle driving, timely collection, and customer service.

•Work independently to operate refuse and recycling collection vehicles on designated one-person collection routes.

•Complete, update and maintain daily route sheets, check lists and vehicle service request forms.

•Provide guidance and training to less experienced employees.

•Prepare and submit container maintenance request forms.

•Transport and set construction and commercial refuse containers at designated locations and job sites.

•Maintain refuse/recycle vehicle: check fluid levels, wash exterior and interior of vehicle, grease vehicle using grease gun, , and ensure proper working order of equipment

•Unload collection vehicle at the appropriate facility.

Ancillary Job Functions

•Perform vehicle inspections, pre and post trip, following DOT and City guidelines.

•Ensure vehicle is equipped with all proper safety equipment and equipment is in proper working order.

•Oversee vehicle maintenance.

•Create landfill tickets through scale house system when un-staffed.

•Make special pickups, collect skips, and deliver refuse collection bins and bags as needed.

•Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered

•High school diploma or equivalent required.

•Minimum of two years of relevant experience.

•Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and CDL Class B with air brake endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position

•Ability to learn scale house computer system.

•Knowledge of safety standards and precautions relating to the operation of large vehicles and the loading and disposal of refuse/trash.

•Ability to perform routine maintenance on large vehicles.

•Ability to operate a large truck safely and effectively in traffic and restrictive spaces.

•Ability to use various hand tools, such as drills, sanders, saws, washers, and paint sprayers, as well as metalworking equipment, to bond, cut, and repair refuse containers of all sizes.

•Ability to train less experienced employees.

•Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

•Ability to work cooperatively with other employees.

•Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job

•May be regularly exposed to varying, inclement outdoor weather conditions. Frequently may be exposed to vibration, work in hazardous traffic conditions, extreme non-weather heat and cold, as well as loud noise.

•Ability to feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, stand, walk, drive, reach with hands/arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb/balance, operate mechanical equipment, and move up and down from/to sitting position on the floor.

•Must be able to have repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement.

•Must have clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, ability to identify and distinguish colors, good peripheral vision, and precise hand-eye coordination.

•May be required to lift up to 50 pounds.

•Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
