Job Description Summary

Work independently to operate specialized refuse collection equipment and perform routine maintenance/repairs on front-loading, rear-loading and roll-off refuse collection vehicles and other specialized equipment used in the collection of refuse.

Essential Job Functions

•Operate a rear-loading, front-loading or roll-off refuse collection truck on designated route to collect refuse and recycling from dumpsters, barrels, and sidewalk receptacles. Inspect recyclables for prohibited items.

•Service customer accounts requiring the use of specialized refuse collection equipment.

•Load truck and transport materials to Landfill, Compost Facility or Material Recovery Facility.

•Repair, maintain, and ensure proper operation of refuse containers and compactors.

•Transport and set construction and commercial refuse containers at designated locations and job sites daily.

•Inspect trucks to ensure compliance with safety requirements.

•Maintain refuse/recycle vehicle: check fluid levels, wash and grease vehicle using grease gun, change tires, and ensure proper working order of equipment.

Ancillary Job Functions

•Drive front loader, rear-loader, roll off, or mini roll-off trucks as needed to assist operation.

•Make special pickups, collect skips, and deliver refuse bags as needed.

•Provide guidance and training to less experienced employees. Demonstrate equipment used and assist in educational programs.

•Maintain accurate reports of weights for refuse and recyclables.

•Operate computer at landfill scale house.

•Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered

•High school diploma or equivalent.

•Minimum of two years of experience operating a variety of refuse collection vehicles.

•Must maintain a valid CDL, Class B, with air brake endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position

•Knowledge of safety standards and precautions relating to the operation of large vehicles and the loading and disposal of refuse/trash and recycling.

•Ability to perform routine maintenance on large vehicles and related equipment.

•Ability to operate specialized equipment to perform job tasks.

•Ability to operate a large truck safely and effectively in traffic and restrictive spaces.

•Ability to use various hand tools, such as drills, sanders, saws, washers, and paint sprayers, as well as metalworking equipment, to bond, cut, and repair refuse containers of all sizes.

•Ability to operate basic computer programs to enter materials data.

•Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

•Ability to work cooperatively with other employees.

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job

•May be exposed to wet/humid conditions, inclement outdoor weather, vibration, extreme temperatures, oils, airborne particles/fumes, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, loud noise levels, or potentially hazardous bodily fluids.

•May be required to work in confined spaces, hazardous traffic conditions, or high/dangerous places.

•Must be able to have repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement.

•Must have clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, ability to identify and distinguish colors, good peripheral vision, and precise hand-eye coordination.

•May be required to lift up to 50 pounds individually.

•Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
